Word Vomit #20

Taking a break from reality is needed at times…

My continuing series on Fridays where I share excerpts of writing that I’ve done in the past through writing prompts, random stream of consciousness, parts of larger works, or as part of my 100-200 daily word exercises.

The point being to attempt to examine what I’ve done for clarity sake and whether or not I can make sense of it…not only to those who read it but to myself as well. Or I highlight something else that I’m interested in that week and want to speak at length about. Vomiting out words if you will.

It was interesting being away for almost two weeks in another country while ‘everything’ was going on back here in America. Even more so was the fact that I purposely disconnected from social media and from most of the major American media news outlets in order to simply just ‘be’ in the moment for one of my best friend’s wedding.

Malaysia felt like a far away world.

Well, it definitely is far away (almost 23 hours of flying to be exact). But another world is just hyperbole I use to describe cultures so different from my own; and it makes me relate it to the settings that we read in our favorite novels. With great writing, we can be transported away to distant utopias, fantastical lands, early civilization, or somewhere in between all of these things.

As I spoke on in a previous post on a cruise I had the pleasure of taking, it’s important to take a break from the ordinary day-to-day monotony every once in a while, if you’re able. That doesn’t necessarily mean going halfway around the world. It could simply mean logging out from your computer or smart phone and doing something that you love after a hard day at work uninterrupted.

The point being that coming back to America and witnessing, hearing, and reading the craziness happening on the 24/7 news cycle throughout the nation made me realize how important it was that I took a mental break from it. No matter what side of the coin you land on politically. I came back emotionally refreshed; and I didn’t know how much I needed it until I had done it. I’ve been a bit sporadic on this blog for the month of November due to traveling and now I’m back at it next week.

Until next time.
