[Attacking the Novel] Novel Writing Check-In

As I write this it is currently 1:03 a.m. I have already thought about calling it quits and going to bed no less than five times already. Anything less than five hours of sleep and I drag through the work day. But after falling off schedule in June due to a litany of reasons, I am determined to stay on course again.

It’s now too early in the morning to try to tip toe around the subject, so I can be fully transparent: I’m not that far into writing my novel. Heck, I’m not even a quarter into where I had hoped to be at this point. I don’t even want to look at my word count because I fear it’s even less than the number I currently have in my head. As I mentioned a few months ago at this point, I hoped to be finished with a first draft by the end of August. Boy, I am ambitious. We’ll call that a soft target date because this task has evolved into something much larger than I previously thought possible.

Am I thinking of giving up? Absolutely NOT! I say that again…ABSOLUTELY NOT! 2017 is the year that I proclaimed that this would happen. Plus, I have direct evidence of knowing that I can accomplish a complete story; and outside of my circle of friends who are expecting my completion of this so that I can ask their favor to read it and give me their opinion…I have now shared this goal with all the people who read this blog (VERY appreciative to those who do so, by the way).

Life is full of peaks and valleys and the creative process is just another Lego piece in that playset to me. Besides, I know that I haven’t been simply doing nothing during all this. I have been busy:

  • Thanks to a push by my local reading and writing group, we’ve been drafting short stories based on writing prompts. I’m currently ten pages done with a fifteen page short story that I plan on entering into a writing contest.
  • I have been actively performing copy editing and content editing duties for a number of blogs over the course of the last year; and my workload has picked up. This is something that I first expressed interest in doing all the way back in October of last year.
  • Continuing forward in my journey to complete the 2017 Reading Challenge! I spoke on my current progress last week.

Although I have already been writing up smaller profiles for my characters, I found a good extended list that could possibly help force me to fill in some blanks on this first go-around. I plan on utilizing this to at least outline the main characters in the story. Anything that can be of aide to me in this endeavor will be fully taken advantage of. 2017 is the year that I take charge and take ahold of all goals and eliminate procrastination. That hasn’t changed. This will be done.

Until next time.
